UK-based supplier of fire detection and suppression products, Fire Suppression Ltd, have announced an ongoing project supporting the UK’s busiest transport network, the London Underground.
Some areas of the Underground are currently using a series of highly-sensitive air sampling detection (ASD) systems that continuously analyse air for early signs of combustion.
After a specialist adaptor component used to configure their system was discontinued by their previous supplier, the Underground required a new part to be produced to continue maintaining fire safety for their passengers and staff.
Due to their extensive industry experience and bespoke in-house manufacturing capabilities, Fire Suppression Ltd were approached to assist with the project.
“With millions of passenger journeys made across the London Underground every day, maintaining the highest standards of fire safety is critical. And, when the Underground’s fire safety installers approached us to assist with their existing fire detection systems, we were pleased to put our manufacturing skills to work to develop a suitable replacement for the discontinued component” says John Martin-Chicharro, Wholesale Manager at Fire Suppression.
Since the Kings Cross fire in 1987, some areas of the Underground have incorporated ASD systems to improve their fire safety and identify fires earlier before they can escalate.
To configure their pipe network that continuously analyses air samples for signs of smoke, 22mm copper pipes were installed. Due to aspirating smoke detectors traditionally only using 25-27mm plastic pipes, a specialist adaptor was sourced to ensure the smaller copper pipes could be connected to the receiver.
When the supplier of these adaptors recently discontinued the product, the specialist nature of the component meant a suitable replacement was not readily available through standard fire safety equipment wholesalers.
To support this, Fire Suppression Ltd produced a bespoke adaptor that helped connect copper pipes and maintain the accuracy, reliability and long-term integrity of their fire detectors.
“While we have a large wholesale stock of fire detection equipment, not every pipe, fitting or system meets a customer’s specific application. This is why we have invested in our manufacturing capabilities from our facility in Bristol, giving us the flexibility to produce bespoke solutions when off-the-shelf products aren’t suitable” adds John.
